COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS TO PROMOTE THE SULTANATE OF OMAN TO EUROPE’S BEST

The Sultanate of Oman represented by the Ministry of Tourism and Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre is taking centre stage to build awareness as one of the world’s newest and exciting international congress venues.

With the venue due for completion in late 2016, the operator, AEG Ogden together with the Ministry of Tourism has been actively targeting key decision makers worldwide to ensure they are aware of the many and unique benefits of hosting their events in Sultanate of Oman.

Following the successful showcasing of the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre at global industry tradeshows, a delegation from the Oman Ministry of Tourism and venue representatives have undertaken the first in a series of exclusive client events in Paris, Geneva, Brussels and London.

The delegation included Oman Embassy Ambassadors, Directors of the Ministry of Tourism and their representatives in each city location, as well as Oman’s leading sportsman, Ahmad Al Harthy, the 2012 Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain Pro-Am 1 Champion.

More than 80 clients with the potential to bring 65,000 convention delegates to Oman attended these presentations in key European markets.

Oman’s Director General of Tourism Development for the Ministry of Tourism, Mr Salim Al Mamari was upbeat about the collaborative initiatives targeting international convention decision makers.

“Many of these decision makers are looking for something a little different and unique to help ‘globalise’ their conventions and at the same time, grow their membership. Oman ticks both of those boxes.

“With Oman, it’s all about telling the story of our 5,000 years of history and our traditional hospitality of welcoming visitors and traders from all over the world.

“With the completion of the new Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre now closer with every passing day, we must take every opportunity to spread the word and secure international conferences beyond 2016,” Mr Al Mamari said.

For the past two years, AEG Ogden’s Group Manager, Convention Sales Development, Rochelle Uechtritz has been working closely with the Omani authorities in the pre-opening global positioning and business development for the venue.
“This is my fourth pre-opening of a world-class convention centre in a ‘green field ‘convention destination and I am genuinely excited about the feedback and interest in the venue, and particularly what Oman as a country has to offer,” Ms Uechtritz said.

Typical of the responses received was this from Ms Suvi Saxen, Manager Asia Pacific for the International Osteoporosis Foundation based in Geneva who said: “Oman has opened my eyes to the beauty of the country and its amazing delegate appeal. Congratulations on the foresight to build such a magnificent venue being the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre within a fully supported convention hub, and I look forward to hopefully bringing our event to Muscat in the coming years.”

OMAN’S AHMAD AL HARTHY & OMAN AIR MOTORBASE TAKE FIRST BRITISH GT WIN

Oman Air Motorbase team-mates Ahmad Al Harthy and Michael Caine celebrated their first race victory of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship season during round five at Snetterton 300 Circuit on Sunday, 16 June, to give a major boost to their 2013 title bid.

Coupled with an eighth place finish in the second of the weekend’s 60-minute races, round six, the duo has provisionally climbed into the championship top four, within just seven points of the series lead, with four rounds remaining.

Although originally finishing in a nonetheless excellent second position during the first of Sunday’s races, to secure the Oman Air Motorbase team’s first ever British GT podium, Ahmad and reigning champion Caine were elevated into first post-race when the rival Porsche of Jon Minshaw and Phil Keen were given a 30 second time penalty for overtaking under yellow flags.

“It’s great for everyone at Oman Air Motorbase to have won for the first time in British GT”, said an elated Ahmad, “It was a great race for us, we qualified well and to come through from eighth on the grid to second place was fantastic. To then take the win is the icing on the cake.”

“Everyone back home in Oman, all my sponsors and supporters who’ve been with me each step of the way, they are the ones who deserve this win. The first few laps were very tough, I just had to stay out of trouble and keep pushing. The team did an amazing job in the pit-stop, Michael then did an incredible job in his stint as usual. It’s great for everyone who has supported this programme.”

Having qualified eighth fastest for round five, Ahmad took the opening stint at the wheel of the Oman Air, Oman Ministry of Sports Affairs, Oman Ministry of Tourism, Nawras, National Bank of Oman and Muscat Eye Laser Center-backed Porsche 997 GT3R and delivered a superb performance.

Climbing into fifth place on the opening lap, the 31-year-old remained right in the wheeltracks of the cars ahead but didn’t take any unnecessary risks as he sought to preserve the car and tyres. On lap seven, he saw his chance to slice past Steve Tandy’s BMW Z4 at the hairpin to take fourth and then proceeded to pressurise Minshaw’s Trackspeed Porsche.

Pitting from fourth place at the end of lap 14 to hand the Oman Air Motorbase car over to Caine, the team did an unbelievable job with the pit-stop to enable the British driver to venture back out into the race in the lead ahead of the Trackspeed car – now with Keen at the wheel.

Although slipping to second shortly after due to the performance differential between the two Porsches, Ahmad and Caine’s car running with 75kg of added ballast, managed to see off the challenge of the M-Sport Racing Audi to retain second – before ultimately taking the win.

In round six, Caine took the opening stint and handed the car over to Ahmad on lap 14 from 10th place. Rejoining the race in 17th position, the Omani driver worked his way through to eighth place at the finish to cap a fantastically competitive weekend.

There is now a long eight week break in the Avon Tyres British GT Championship calendar with round seven of the 2013 season taking place at Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit on 10 & 11 August 2013. Before then, Ahmad will be back in action in the Blancpain Endurance Series for round three of its season, at Paul Ricard HTTT in the south of France, on 29 & 30 June.

OMANI STAR AL HARTHY MAKES HISTORY WITH FIRST BLANCPAIN CLASS WIN

Omani sportscar racer Ahmad Al Harthy once again entered the history books at Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit on Sunday, 2nd June, after claiming his maiden class victory in round two of the Blancpain Endurance Series – becoming the first driver of Arab origin to stand atop the championship podium.

Accustomed to achieving notable firsts in his career, such as becoming the first Omani to win a title in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship with his 2012 Pro-Am 1 success, the 31-year-old has now achieved his first European endurance racing win during only his second Blancpain outing.

“This is what happens when everything goes according to plan”, said the rightfully elated GTR Class racer, “We always knew we had the pace to win, the race went perfectly, the team did an amazing job with the car – it’s been a fantastic weekend.”

Teaming with veteran Slovakian racer Miro Konôpka, the ARC Bratislava-NBO Racing Team pairing produced a faultless race in which Ahmad contested the first and third stints of the challenging and incredibly demanding three-hour encounter.

Under bright Silverstone sunshine, the Omani delivered a tremendous first hour in the National Bank of Oman, Nawras, Oman Ministry of Tourism and Oman Ministry of Sports Affairs-backed Porsche 997 GT3R to take the GTR Class lead prior to handing the car over to Konôpka on lap 28.

Producing a similarly strong stint, the ARC Bratislava team owner ran strongly during the middle part of the race and although slipping to second prior to Ahmad’ second run in the car, the duo looked well set for a dream result on only their second race weekend as team-mates.

Regaining the GTR Class lead within a handful of laps, Ahmad charged on towards the finish with victory in his sights and sealed the success on lap 80 – sparking delirious celebrations in the team garage and among the many guests and sponsors in attendance at Silverstone this weekend.

“I had a very good opening lap, we knew we had to push as hard as we could throughout the race and it was really hard – the competitors in Blancpain are fierce”, added the Muscat racer, “We took the lead, Miro [Konôpka] did a good job in his stint and then I was back in for the final hour. I was lucky to avoid a few incidents along the way but the whole team really deserves this result.

“We had a lot of fans, sponsors, family and friends at Silverstone supporting us again this weekend, I feel very proud to have achieved such a great result in front of them. Racing at Silverstone in British GT last weekend really helped prepare me for this, that was a big consideration for us when we made our plans for this season. Now we have our first win, hopefully there are more to come!”

Paul Ricard HTTT, in Le Castellet southern France, will host the third round of the Blancpain Endurance Series over the weekend 29/30 June. Before then, Ahmad will be back in action in the Avon Tyres British GT Championship at Snetterton 300 Circuit in the UK on 15/16 June.

OMAN’S AHMAD AL HARTHY RETURNS TO SILVERSTONE ON 24 & 25 MAY 2013

One of the Middle East’s most talented sportsmen, Ahmad Al Harthy of the Sultanate of Oman will be returning to the scene of his most career defining moment to date, Silverstone, on 24 & 25 May 2013. On his last visit to the famous track the Omani driver became 2012 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Pro-Am 1 Champion and earned a place in motor sport history. Ahmad will arrive at Silverstone this year placed 6th in the British GT Championship standings after racing at Oulton Park and Rockingham.  Qualifying takes place on Sat 25 May 2013, with racing on Sunday 26 May 2013.

Ahmad al Harthy is proud to be Omani, he reflects Oman’s image today: young, dynamic, modern all the while maintaining firm traditional heritage. The Oman Ministry of Tourism sponsors Ahmad alongside Oman Air, Oman Ministry of Sports Affairs, Nawras, National Bank of Oman and Muscat Eye Laser Centre, as they all appreciate the increased awareness his presence on the track can bring of Oman to the spectators.

Ahmad has helped to promote Oman as the ideal holiday destination and as one that now provides the perfect break for sports enthusiasts due to major international sporting events: The Tour of Oman in February this year saw 18 professional cycling teams made up of 144 of the most recognized names in the sport including Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome (2013’s winner) cover a total distance of 938.5km through Oman’s vibrant capital city, Muscat and the Al Batinah, the Al Dhakaliya and Al Dhahirah regions in glorious 30˚C sunshine. The Tour is expected to be even bigger and better in 2014. On the water, Oman Sail has hosted the Extreme 40’s catamaran races in Muscat, another exhilarating spectator sport. With professional sport in Oman continuing to develop, there is hope that one day in the near future Ahmad will be able to race in an international motor racing event in front of his home crowd.

After Silverstone Ahmad will be racing in the British GT Championship at Snetterton in June and then Brands Hatch in August. He is taking part in The Blancpain Endurance Series with the British leg taking place in Silverstone on 01 & 02 June.  Keep up to speed with Ahmad's 2013 progress at his official website www.ahmadalharthy.com,  follow him on Twitter @AlHarthyRacing or visit the Ahmad Al Harthy Facebook fan page at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ahmad-Al-Harthy/111700892183537.
